 Specification

The dual-SIM Honor 8 Pro runs Android 7.0 Nougat-based EMUI 5.1 out-of-the-box. The company has touted the adaptive nature of the OS in the past, and claims that 90 percent of core operations can be completed in 3 easy steps.  and sports a 5.7-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) LTPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The smartphone is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 960 (four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.4GHz) coupled with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Starting with the optics on the smartphone, Honor 8 Pro comes with a dual rear camera setup that consists of two 12-megapixel sensors with f/2.2 aperture, laser autofocus, LED flash, and 4K video recording. As you might expect, one sensor takes the images in RGB while the other sensor takes the images in monochrome. At front, the smartphone comes with an 8-megapixel sensor coupled with an 77-degree wide-angle lens. The Honor 8 Pro comes with 128GB of built-in storage, which is further expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM format. The company says this 128GB variant is meant specifically for the Indian market, and that the "rest of the world will have to make do with 64GB." The connectivity options on the Honor 8 Pro smartphone include 4G VoLTE connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, USB Type-C, Bluetooth v4.2, 3.5mm headphone jack, and NFC. As mentioned earlier, the handset features a 4000mAh battery that's rated to deliver up to 1.44 days of battery life with heavy use and 2 days with regular use. Sensors on board include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, infrared sensor, and proximity sensor. It measures 157x77.5x6.97mm and weighs 184 grams. The smartphone comes with the Galaxy on Fire 3 and Jaunt VR apps pre-installed and company says that it has partnered with Gameloft and GoPro for in-built apps as well.

 Design

The design of the Honor 8 Pro is slightly different when compared to its sibling, the Honor 8. The older model has a glossy glass back, whereas the Honor 8 Pro gets a metal unibody. It's available in two colours, Midnight Black and Navy Blue, and you’ll be happy with either one. The smartphone is quite sleek, measuring just 6.97 mm in thickness, and has curved sides. What is surprising is that Honor has managed to cram a 4000 mAh battery into this body.
At the front, there's a 5.7-inch LTPS panel, with super-slim side borders. The top and bottom are thicker, and there's an Honor logo below the screen. Above it, you'll find the 8-megapixel selfie shooter along with the earpiece and a couple of sensors. The power and volume buttons are on the right side. The power button is well within reach but you might have to stretch a little to reach the volume controls. The left side of the Honor 8 Pro only has the SIM slot. Honor has placed the USB Type-C port and the 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, along with the loudspeaker and the primary microphone. At the top, there's a secondary microphone and a IR emitter which lets you control household appliances.
The highlight of the Honor 8 Pro, the dual rear cameras, are placed at the back in the upper left corner, along with a dual-tone LED flash. Unlike many other phones, both cameras are fitted flush with the body of the smartphone, under a glass window which should keep the lenses from picking up scratches. The fingerprint scanner is also at the back, and we found its placement to be a little higher than what would have been comfortable. You’ll have to stretch your finger a little or shuffle the device in your palm to reach the fingerprint scanner.
Honor ships this phone with only an 18W charger and USB cable, but the party trick is that the box itself can be converted into a cardboard-style VR headset. You get all the required materials, including the lenses, in the box.

 Display & Camera

The Honor 8 Pro sports a 5.7-inch IPS display with 1440 x 2560 resolution. The Quad HD resolution and a pixel density of 515 ppi make for a terrific display. The display is sharp and the colors are vivid. The contrast ratio is top-notch as well, and while the display is a tad reflective, sunlight legibility is pretty good.
The display on the Honor 8 Pro offers a maximum brightness of 560 nits, which is brilliant. The black levels are deep and while there’s a blue tint on white, it’s not too noticeable to the naked eye.
The Honor 8 Pro has a 2.5D curved glass which offers a nice swiping experience across the large display. There’s Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection as well which will keep scratches at bay and prevent shatters to a certain extent.
The Quad HD IPS LCD panel on the Honor 8 Pro is one of the highlights of the device, but the obvious flip side to a higher resolution display is the bigger strain on the GPU and a hit on the battery life.
The 8-megapixel front shooter on the Honor 8 Pro comes with a f/2.0 lens and manages to capture quite detailed selfies even indoors and in low-light, like when you’re out for dinner with friends. There’s of course the beautification feature which masks blemishes on your face, if beauty is just skin-deep for you.
 Rear Camera

The highlight of the Honor 8 Pro is its dual 12-megapixel rear cameras. Unlike smartphones that have a telephoto lens on the second camera, these two are used as independent RGB and monochrome sensors. Honor claims that the monochrome sensor can absorb more light which results in better details. To leverage the hardware, Honor has built its own camera app that offers multiple modes to choose from.
While Auto mode is set by default, you can take control using the Pro mode for stills and video. You can also set it to monochrome mode which uses only the monochrome sensor to deliver a black-and-white image. We found that the phone would get warm when using the camera even though it managed to run cool at other times including when gaming.
The photos with this phone turned out really good, and details really were better than average. Colors were accurate and their is no chromatic aberration or purple fringing when shooting against the light. Macros were also impressive, and the phone managed a good amount of separation between subjects and backgrounds. In low light, The camera would sharpen images which improves visibility at the cost of noise and some loss of detail. Selfies were also good, and the camera app smoothens them. By default, the camera app adds a watermark advertising the name of the phone. You can disable this, but the option is buried within the
Settings menu. We hope this option isn’t turned out by default in the units that ship to the consumers.
The Honor 8 Pro can record video at 4K but the ability to continuous autofocus is lost at this resolution. You can switch to 1080p at 30 or 60fps to enable it.

 Price

Launched in the UK in April for £474.99, The Honor 8 Pro is know arrived in India for Rs. 29,999, and the company has brought only the 6GB RAM/ 128GB inbuilt storage of the smartphone to the country. At the price, the smartphone goes head-to-head with the OnePlus 5 in the Indian market - specifically, the 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage priced at Rs. 32,999 - that also sports a dual rear camera setup. The Honor 8 Pro will be made available exclusively via Amazon India, and its first sale exclusively for Amazon Prime members will start at 6 pm IST on Monday, July 10 - which also happens to be the start of Amazon Prime Day. Open sales begin from 12 am on July 13. As for launch offers, during the Prime Day sale, Prime subscribers will get 15 percent cashback if they use HDFC Bank credit and debit cards. During the open sale, Amazon is enticing users with its Vodafone 45GB over five months offer, as well as no-cost EMI options.

 Battery

Battery life of massive 4,000mAh battery slightly better than average battery life one of the main benefits of a plus-size phone is all the extra space available to squeeze a massive battery in. On that front, the Honor 8 Pro’s got more junk in its trunk than the whole Kardashian clan combined. A massive 4,000mAh battery to be precise. As some will tell you, though, size isn’t everything. Despite its massive capacity, the 8 Pro’s battery life is pretty average. OK, yes, you’ll comfortably get a full day’s use out of the phone while hammering the features, but not much more.

You’re not going to be able to eke a couple of days heavy use out of the thing without your battery circling the drain before you get home. We regularly had 20% left come evening after having spent the day hammering social media, emails, web browsing and some commute-busting gaming. Honor’s claims of two day’s regular use on a single charge are a little bit embellished, so unless you’re happy to take things lighter on the usage front, nightly charges are still going to be a must. That or keeping a spare charger to hand at work.

It’s not the speediest to charge either. It took the phone 30 minutes to restore just 20% of its power supply. What’s more playing a 90 minute full HD video on full brightness, the Honor 8 Pro haemorrhaged 25% of its battery. This is a huge figure compared with the competition. By contrast the OnePlus 3T loose just 14% of its power.
